Which Rabies Vaccine is Best For Dogs in India?

Rabies is a highly infectious viral disease that can cause serious illness and even death in susceptible animals. It is caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system of mammals.

The vaccine is designed to induce the body to produce antibodies that can neutralise the virus if it becomes infected. This protects the body from rabies infection and allows it to fight off future infections.

What is Rabies?

Rabies is a serious and often fatal viral disease that affects the brain. It is usually transmitted by wild animals like skunks, raccoons, foxes, and bats.

People who have been bitten by a wild animal or pet that may have rabies should see a doctor right away. The doctor will examine your wound and ask questions to help determine whether you need treatment for rabies.

In some cases, the wound is cleaned and a rabies vaccine and immune globulin (a protein that helps your body make antibodies to the rabies virus) are given.

Symptoms of rabies usually develop within 4 to 56 weeks after exposure. They include insomnia, anxiety, confusion, hallucinations, agitation, trouble swallowing and partial paralysis.

Rabies Vaccines

Rabies is a viral infection that attacks the central nervous system. It is a lethal disease that can only be prevented by administering a rabies vaccine.

The rabies virus, which is part of a family called the lyssaviruses, can be found in a variety of mammals including dogs, cats and humans. It can be transmitted by bites and can cause serious complications if not treated promptly.

There are several rabies vaccines available in India. Some are administered after a person has been exposed to rabies, while others can be given ahead of time as a preventive measure.

For people who have been exposed to rabies, it is recommended that they receive three or more doses of a rabies vaccine. This can be done with a combination of both intramuscular and intradermal vaccines.

The rabies vaccines are most effective when administered in the presence of an antibody response to the rabies virus. Getting the rabies vaccine and taking it correctly after an exposure to a rabid animal can prevent a fatal case of rabies.

Rabies Prevention

India is a high-risk region for rabies, with stray and unvaccinated dogs roaming the streets. This large free-roaming population presents a challenging challenge in achieving the global goal to eliminate human rabies deaths by 2030.

Despite efforts to increase access to post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) in India, rabies is still a significant public health problem. Its transmission is mainly through saliva bites or scratches, but can also be transmitted from other animals including cats, mongooses, foxes, jackals and wolves.

To achieve the global goal of eliminating canine-mediated human rabies, mass dog vaccination campaigns are necessary. However, state-wide dog vaccination campaigns remain a challenging practical and logistical issue in India, owing to the high percentage of free-roaming dogs and low vaccination coverage.

Rabies Vaccination Schedule

Rabies is a fatal viral disease transmitted by bites from rabid animals. It can cause flu-like symptoms like headaches, fever, vomiting, nausea and coughing before developing paralysis and death.

Rabies virus is present in many parts of the world and spreads by direct contact with the saliva or brain tissue of an infected animal. In people, it is most commonly acquired through being bitten by a rabid dog.

It is important for all travellers, regardless of their age or status, to seek medical advice immediately after a possible rabies exposure. This applies to travellers in areas considered low risk for rabies as well as those who have received a pre-exposure rabies vaccine.

The rabies vaccination schedule should be used to prevent the transmission of rabies from a previously unvaccinated person to an infected animal or person (see 'prevention of rabies'). A regimen of four 1-mL doses of HDVC or PCEC vaccine is administered intramuscularly on days 3, 7, and 14 after exposure.
